Dr. Julie Stamm-Concussion Concerns

Dr. Juilie Stamm is an expert on concussions and in this episode talks about some of the other concerns around concussion that aren’t always at the front of the discussion. With many high profile injuries happening recently it was a great time to connect with Dr. Stamm and have her give some fresh reminders on many of the aspects of concussion.
Dr. Stamm is an athletic trainer, neuroscientist and concussion researcher. She recently wrote a book on how concussions and repetitive impacts can affect the brain of the developing of young children. This is obviously a big deal and it has become even more of a discussion with some of the high profile injuries that have occurred in the NFL. In this episode we talk about what has been happening with these injuries and a lot of the details around them and what it all means. We discuss the fencing response, second impact syndrome, and the ability for patients to make informed decisions after suffering a traumatic brain injury. Each of these topics is huge and could take an entire episode but we discuss the basics of each to create a baseline for discussion going forward and also highlight the importance of being conservative when managing these injuries.
